After PYGMALION, this is certainly Shaw’s most famous and celebrated play. Based upon the actual court transcripts of Joan the Maid’s trialin 1431. He was inspired to write the play after the Church finally agreed to apologize for her murder and canonize her in 1920. The plot follows her teen life as a farm girl who, in spite of being a woman, is convinced she carries the voice and spirit of God in her heart and is determined to help lead the French to victory against the British. Only after she has succeeded do the heads of the Church realize how dangerous a free-thinking female public hero could be to the institution of religion, shaking its very male-dominated foundation to the core. Join us for this rare viewing of an astonishingly entertaining telling of this venerable tale.

These script-in-hand all-star readings are always sold out.

Each month, Project Shawbrings you either one of Shaw’s scintillating plays or a play by those who shared his ‘art as activism’ view of life. This is the acclaimed staged reading series that has been playing to sold-out crowds for the last 15 years!

“Gingold Theatrical Group provides an invaluable –and unique –service to New Yorkers. Not only does it keep topnotch productions of great works of art before the public on a regular basis as no other theater company can, but it also does something less obvious. It keeps the tradition of intelligent argument, embodied in Shaw’s plays but otherwise much lacking from public discourse, alive for those who need it most: the thinking people of a great city.” –Jesse Green, New York Magazine.
