About the Play
In this charming, witty, and romantic play, two people determined to remain single meet aboard an around-the-world cruise. What begins as a chance encounter gradually transforms both of their lives in the most unexpected ways. Written by Shaw in 1933 while taking his own first world cruise, Village Wooing is one of his most intimate, romantic, and quietly profound late works—a sparkling two-hander filled with humor, intelligence, and emotional surprise.
David Staller’s 2026 adaptation presents the play in a gender-neutral form, allowing the roles to be performed by couples of any gender combination while remaining faithful to Shaw’s language and spirit.
Production Concept
Village Wooing will be presented as an intimate Salon Production, designed specifically for the unique atmosphere of The House of the Redeemer. Performed by celebrated Broadway artists and notable real-life couples, the production will feature a rotating cast throughout the engagement, allowing audiences to experience fresh interpretations of Shaw’s beloved comedy across the weekend.
With no elaborate scenery or technical spectacle, the production places the focus squarely on Shaw’s language, the chemistry between the performers, and the intimacy of sharing the experience with fewer than 100 audience members.
We believe this collaboration beautifully complements the House’s architectural character and cultural mission while creating a distinctive theatrical event that encourages repeat attendance and community engagement.

Village Wooing is presented as a Salon Production — an intimate, artist-driven theatrical event designed for a uniquely personal and atmospheric setting. In the tradition of great literary salons, the performance places extraordinary artists at the center of the room, in direct and personal communion with a small audience of no more than 99 guests. The focus is entirely on Shaw’s language, the chemistry of the performers, and the singular experience of witnessing two real-life partners bring one of Shaw’s most charming and quietly profound works to life. There is no barrier between the performance and the audience: no elaborate scenery, no technical artifice. Only Shaw, the room, and the people in it.
