GINGOLD THEATRICAL GROUP will be partnering with the YEATS SOCIETY OF NEW YORK to present an evening discussion and reception of SHAW AND YEATS on Thursday, February 1st at 6pm in midtown. Host David Staller will lead a discussion of Shaw’s ‘Irish Play’, JOHN BULL’S OTHER ISLAND, which was commissioned by Yeats. This will be followed by a wine and refreshment reception.

Yeats had commissioned Shaw to write a play to open Dublin’s Abbey Theatre. Yeats rejected it claiming that its approach to ‘The Irish Question’ was far too comedic. Shaw then had Harley Granville Barker produce and star in the production at London’s Royal Court Theatre where it was immediately praised for its broad ironic lampooning of the British Empire and its failure to address the socio-political issues regarding Ireland. At a Royal Command Performance for King Edward VII, he is reported to have laughed so hard he broke his chair.

Shaw and Yeats, two brilliant Irishmen determined to use their artistic voice for the greater good, remained jovial friends in spite of their different visions of art in our world.

Gingold Theatrical Group has produced Script-In-Hand readings of JOHN BULL’S OTHER ISLAND several times as part of their PROJECT SHAW series at Symphony Space.

Themes of the play include the struggle for a Free Ireland, colonialism, women’s rights, sexuality, class systems, and education.
